Leading system redesign: the road to transformation
Many countries are exploring how their school systems might need to be redesigned in order to meet the changing societal demands of the 21st century.
This conference will share the varied ways in which different countries approach the redesign of schools and education systems.
Day one: redesigning learning
A full day focused on classroom practice. Explore student leadership, formative assessment or competency-based learning in a workshop format in the morning. In the afternoon the spotlight will be on creativity,
Day two: redesigning schooling
School leaders and practitioners from around the world will showcase how they are redesigning their schools with examples including merging of phases, ‘stage not age’, flexible time schedules, curriculum redesign, smaller units within schools and vertical tutoring.
Day three: redesigning leadership
The focus will be on school and system leadership. In England school leaders are redesigning school leadership – often including students – and taking on broader system leadership. What does this look like? Is it happening in other countries? What are the implications for the future?
What is system redesign?
System redesign is an approach to schooling, and in particular to the transformation of education, based on the belief that individual schools and educators are not only the appropriate source of systemic change in education, but the best source. It turns the traditional top-down approach to education design on its head and asserts that by designing every aspect of a school to meet the needs of the community it serves, an education system that is truly personalised to the needs of learners is possible.
This is an ambitious agenda but it is already happening around the world, as schools individually address the challenge of meeting learners’ needs. At the heart of all system redesign is the question, what can we do differently to raise student attainment?
