Gareth Malone

Gareth Malone studied drama at the University of East Anglia and singing at the Royal Academy of Music with Janice Chapman and Jonathan Papp. He was the Edward Heath assistant animateur to the London Symphony Orchestra’s Discovery programme for two years and now runs their two choirs, the Community Choir and Youth Choir.

Recent highlights of his career include a family concert for City of London Sinfonia, the Wigmore Hall Lieder Project in 2005 and being choir master for New London Children’s Choir for Mahler 8 under Daniele Gatti (RPO). He continues to work for many of the major companies in the country including the Royal Opera House, the Philharmonia, English National Opera Baylis programme and Glyndebourne, and combines his career in music with work in education.

He first came to many people's attention in the BBC's documentary series, The Choir, in which he attempted to start a school choir from scratch and took them to competing in the world choir games in China.

The sequel, The Choir - Boys Don't Sing, transmitted on BBC Two in 2008, featured Gareth Malone teaching choral singing, this time in the all boys state school, Lancaster School. In The Choir - Boys Don't Sing, Gareth Malone tries to lead a 100-strong all boys choir to perform at the Music for Youth Schools Prom at the Royal Albert Hall.
