University of Hertfordshire
As the only university in Hertfordshire, we have built up good
relationships with many of the local schools and colleges in the
county. However, we have also collaborated and supported over 40
schools nationally, particularly in London and Essex.
One of the key benefits of working within a trust is that we can
effectively inform and enhance student opportunities in a more
altruistic way. Two local schools adopted trust status earlier this
year and this strengthened our relationships with them.
We are interested in personalising career advice to ensure each
student is aware of the opportunities that are open to them. Every
student is different and we are involved in creating wide career
provisions for their needs in the form of a broad all encompassing
advisory service.
Many universities traditionally provide induction days. We
provide these as well. The university has student ambassadors who
engage the students in activities and speak to them about their
university experience. We also believe that engaging with younger
students is just as important. We have been visiting schools and
giving career advice to Year 9 students who will be thinking about
what to study at GCSEs. As well as this, we assist several schools
with transition from primary to secondary and secondary to sixth
form. Raising expectations at an early age is vital and an
awareness of key study skills will continue to benefit students for
the remainder of their school life.
For the older students, we stress researching into the future
and help build their profiles so that they will be more attractive
not just to universities but also to future employers. We get them
thinking about doing a range of extra-curricular activities and
work experience.
We feel formalising our relationship with schools through trust
status means we can co-ordinate more effectively, maximise
resources and enables us and the schools to put milestones to our
achievements.
